COSHH Assessment — Anti-Freeze (Ethylene Glycol)
This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers anti-freeze based on ethylene glycol (1,2-ethanediol) — the most widely used engine coolant and antifreeze concentrate. Anti-freeze is found in virtually every vehicle fleet, plant hire operation, agricultural setting and facilities management environment where machinery or vehicles are operated in cold conditions.
What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?
The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:
- Substance identification — trade name, chemical name (ethylene glycol / 1,2-ethanediol), SDS reference and physical state
- Health effects and first aid — inhalation, ingestion, skin contact and eye contact, with specific first aid for each route; ingestion is the primary acute hazard as ethylene glycol is toxic if swallowed and has a deceptively sweet taste
- Workplace exposure limits — vapour exposure limit explained in plain language; low vapour pressure at ambient temperatures means inhalation risk is limited under normal use
- CLP hazard classification — Irritant pictogram
- Risk rating — pre-assessed as Moderate
- Control measures — safe handling, storage, prevention of skin contact and environmental spill controls; ethylene glycol is harmful to aquatic life
- PPE requirements — gloves and eye protection
- Emergency procedures — spillage containment, disposal as hazardous waste and environmental precautions
Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?
This assessment is suitable for any organisation that uses, stores or handles anti-freeze or engine coolant products, including:
- Vehicle fleet operators and transport businesses
- Plant hire and construction equipment operators
- Agricultural and groundscare operations
- Motor trade workshops and garages
- Facilities management and building maintenance teams
